Rifle Washed Up On Sussex Beach
18th March 2015
A firearm believed to be an AK-47 assault rifle has been found washed up on a beach in East Sussex.
It was handed into Sussex Police by a member of the public who came across it at Peacehaven over the weekend.
The firearm, which in a working condition can fire 600 rounds a minute, was secured by officers. It had no ammunition.
Chief Inspector Dave Padwick said the weapon was not believed to have been linked to any crimes.
"It will now be subject to a full examination as we try to establish its provenance," he said.
Ownership of an AK-47, or Kalashnikov rifle as they are sometimes called, is illegal in the UK.
