This website is run by the National Ballistics Intelligence Service. Since March 2021 the website sits on the Single Online Home (SOH) the national Police platform.
We want the website to be as informative and easy to use as possible for everybody. You should be able to:
zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver).
We've also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.
How accessible are the websites?
We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:
you cannot currently modify the line height or spacing of text
our PDF documents are not fully accessible to screen reader software. We will not be updating pdfs produced prior to 23 September 2018
live video streams do not have captions
some of our online forms may be difficult to navigate using just a keyboard
you cannot skip to the main content when using a screen reader
there's a limit to how far you can magnify the maps.
There are some aspects of WCAG 2.1 AA guidelines that would place a disproportionate burden of work upon the National Ballistics Intelligence Service to make changes to the current websites.
Whilst we strive to adhere to the accepted guidelines and standards for accessibility and usability, it is not always possible to do so in all areas of the website.
Because of our partnership with third-party vendors for some web systems, some parts of the website do not meet the WCAG2 AA accessibility criteria. These systems are online payments and local police area maps. We are currently working with our suppliers to provide upgraded, accessible interfaces into these systems.
We are also under the publication scheme required to publish a large number of non-HTML based we content, in particular PDF files. We are investigating mechanisms for making PDF documents more accessible.
